& About
Gimble
Mill is well positioned for exploring most of Cornwall and even
West Devon. You don't have to look very far to find some great
places to visit and things to do. We are situated within an
area of outstanding natural beauty and much of the surrounding
moorland has recently been awarded World Heritage Site
status.
As
well as all the water sports Siblyback lake has to offer, you
also have some great beaches to the south and north. The
fishing towns of Looe, Polperrow and Fowey offer some of
the best seafood restaurants in the country and are all within
half an hour.
The
Eden project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the
award winning Camel Valley vineyard are all within 20 -
30 minutes.
Within
15 minutes you have Restormel and Launceston castles, the
ancient town of Lostwithiel on the river Fowey, Pencarrow
house and Lanhydrock house and gardens.
There
is also loads to see and do closer to home. The moors are great
for walking and horse riding and are scattered with ancient
sites and landmarks to explore such as King Donierts Stone,
Trethevy Quoit and the Cheeswring which are all within walking
distance.
The
Hurlers stone circles near Minions just a short walk across
the moors from the B&B are perhaps the most important ancient
site. Although much smaller and less famous than Stone Hendge
many historians think them to be older and more historically significant.
The Rillaton Cup, a famous bronze age cup dating back at least
5000 years and one of Britain's top 10 treasures was also found
near Minions at Rillaton Burrow. The cup was originally found
in 1837 and passed into the hands of the Duchy of Cornwall. The
cup was then lost for many years until it turned up in the bed
chamber of King George V, he had been using it to keep his cufflinks
in!
As
well as the ruggedness of the moors the local area also has more
tranquil environments to offer. The stream that runs through Gimble
Mill is a tributary of the river Fowey, it joins the main river
just upstream from a section called Golitha Falls. Golitha
is an idyllic spot where you can follow the river as it winds
through beech woodland and over the falls. It's a great spot to
walk or take a picnic, some of the plunge pools are also deep
enough to cool off in on a hot summer's day.
